Up Close and Personal

Up close and personal

I had wondered what the Grass looked like up close, and none of the pictures I found showed detail . It is very thin and soft so far.

GONE GREEN!

ONE MONTH LATER...
Days 22-34

June 7 (Day 22) 1st Mowing- Some of the blades were really long so I decided to mow at the mower's highest setting. It only cut a handful of trimmings. In addition, the grass is still thin compared to an established lawn.

                                June  7th (Day 22)

June 14  (Day  29)  This is the spot on the lawn I've been most concerned about. I will keep tabs for you. I think that in my over-watering, an algae has taken over this area, making it difficult for the seeds to sprout. I have cut back on the watering to once a day and soon I will cut back to twice a week. My goal is to water deeply once a week.
                           June 14  (Day 29)

                              June 16 (Day 31)
June 16  (Day  31) Looking good!

June 18  (Day 33)  I mowed it the second time as the first time I Mowed it, I raised the mower all the way up and it was too high  I didnt get more than a couple of cups of grass. So, I waited a week lowered it to cut less than a third of the blade of grass.

                                   June 19  (DAY 34)
June 19  (DAY 34 ) This area was a concern before as it was growing in very thinly, but it has filled in nicely now. We started cutting in a mowing edge border around the outside walls of the lawn. It is a 4" x 1" brown ground rubber that looks like a mulch.

Rain Forest?????

Days 11-21

May 30th  (Day13) quite a bit came up Pretty quickly.

May 30th (Day 13) Its  Kind of interesting to see from a different
angle how much more full the lawn looks from a low angle.
.
 May 30th (Day 13)

May 31(Day 14) some areas have been slower
            to come in than others.
    May 31st ( Day 14)
May 31st (Day 14) Some algae started to Grow
So I decided to cut back on some of the watering
May 31( Day 14) some areas seem a little bit thin,
                                                    and behind the rest.
 June 1st (Day 15)
 June 1st (Day17)

June 2nd (Day 18) seems to be fillin in everywhere,
                                           except for few parts

June 4th (Day 20)
                                                             June 4th (Day 20)

June 5  (Day  21)  Pretty Impressive  for 20 days.
June 5 (Day 21) Still going Strong minus a few
                                                       thin areas.

June 5th (Day 21) Some areas are thin still,
I have hand spread some extra seeds  and put down a little
compost to cover  areas that are thin.  It does look promising
as for a full lawn as there are a lot of small blades just
      germinating still at day 21.

Preparations

Our preparations / soil conditions

Our soil conditions : We have a really sandy soil mixture here.  I would hesitate to say its a sandy loam, but it is  mostly sandy, With a little bit of clay.
It was recommended to prevent compaction and help water retention that we add some perlite to the soil and some organic material( compost).

More work than I thought it would be, but we:

( Started this process in Sept. 2012 and seeded May 2013
1 Removed all the vegetation by hand picking and Round up weed killer (several times)
2 Roto-tilled the soil to  7 inches or so.
3 Roto-tilled  Both 2" of Perlite and a 1/2 in. of organic compost into the soil
4 installed  a new popup sprinkler system with hunters mp 1000 Rotator nozzles( high efficiency)
5 Regraded and smoothed the soil and some light compaction with a Sod Water wheel roller.
6 hydroseeded with Pearl's Premium

At the recommendation of the Pearl's Premium Staff,  They suggested best results With spreading the Seeds by hydroseeding the Area, because of the fertilizers, Tackifiers, and wood fiber mulch that all help to protect the seeds from washing away and from birds eating the seeds.   So we Started our Pearl's Premium experiment on May 17, 2013

Note: If you dont do Hydro-seeding make sure you put a layer of compost or something to cover the seeds  they need something to cover them to keep them moist. The label doesn't say it as a part of planting instructions but if you know anything about planting new grass seed it needs to be covered by at least  1/4 in. of soil or compost. I read a lot of peoples reviews about how the followed the instructions on the label to a "T", and no results!!!!!

Bags of Perlite Used to amend the soil.
Spreading the perlite before roto-tilling.
After the Perlite was mixed in.
